Baroque Autumn at Fontevraud

Two "Centres Culturels de Rencontre" join together in music

Prepare yourself for a really glowing musical autumn, with Les Arts Florissants and the Fontevraud Abbey! Again this year, the two are joining together musically, over a weekend when the artists will come and adorn with their song the exceptional site of Fontevraud. Two days of harmony in between soaring architecture and music, where vocal art, be it sacred or secular meets a very particular resonance in this unique place.

Throughout the two afternoons, the public will be invited to stroll between the different spaces within the abbey, accompanied by plain-song of the XIIth century. At the end of the day comes the time for a great concert conducted by Paul Agnew. Two programmes are being proposed, conceived as anthologies of secular and sacred airs by great baroque composers: the Englishman Henry Purcell (1659-1695) the first evening, and then the Italian Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613) to close the festivities.

A rich musical time to be had by all !

Purcell - Divine hymns

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) counts amongst the fetish composers of Les Arts Florissants and of Paul Agnew. Conceived in the form of an anthology, this programme brings together a selection of sacred pieces, principally written for private devotion – a genre very widespread in England in the XVIIth century, and which inspired works as moving as they were understated and intimate. Next to Purcell, a few of his contemporaries are also in the spotlight (William Croft, John Blow, Pelham Humfrey). A concert which should be absolutely divine.

Gesualdo - Madrigals, Book I

After having been through the complete madrigals of Monteverdi, Paul Agnew is bringing together his faithful madrigal singers in order to tackle a cappella the work of another composer: Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613). Less well known than his fellow countryman, Gersualdo is nonetheless the author of numerous sacred and secular airs of an extreme beauty, which this programme invites you to discover in dialogue with the works of his contemporaries Luzzascho Luzzaschi, Luca Marenzio, Benedetto Pallaviccino – and of course Claudio Monteverdi. The climax of the evening will be a complete reading of the First Book of Madrigali a cinque voci, thus enabling the public to fully immerse itself in the work of Gesualdo.
